Reading Selectively or Extensively?
People's ideas on reading differ greatly from person to person. Some think that we are living in an information age, more and more books are published each year, it is impossible and unnecessary for us to read all the books. Moreover, there are certainly some books which are not worth reading. So, we should select some hooks we are interested in and ignore others. Reading selectively can help us concentrate our limited time and attention on those selected hooks.
Others, however, think that science and technology is developing so rapidly that many fields of sciences are interrelated. If we want to live a better life in this ever changing world, we should read whatever books we can come across. Reading extensively can help us enlarge our view and grasp the general knowledge from different fields.
In my opinion, the two reading methods have both their advantages and drawbacks. If we only read selectively, our knowledge may be limited in a specific field. If we read too extensively, we may not have so much time and energy and be expertisedin one particular field. Therefore, the combination of the two ways will be more reasonable and beneficial.
